If you never thought goth could be chic, you haven’t met these ladies. Emily & Abigail, the two style icons behind the popular fashion blog Lovely Wanderlust, are known around the blogosphere for their edgy (or should we say greaaaazy) ensembles, laden with leather, sky-high platforms and skull-bearing accessories.
It was approaching sunset in Battery Park with the wind being both a distraction and a photo prop – standing by the iconic Wall Street bull I saw Emily and Abigail equipped with studded bags, strutting with legs that seemed like they came up to their chins. They are the two sweetest girls I know, with drive and style to boot. The vibe I immediately get is trendy chic mixed with a gothic edge – something you wouldn’t expect to see pulled off so surprisingly well.
GG: So what’s the real story behind Lovely Wanderlust?
LW: WanderLust began solely as a way for us to keep up to date with each other’s wardrobes, because we foolishly went to separate colleges. Once we graduated in May of 2010, we realized we had gained a loyal following, and decided to revamp the site. That September we devoted our time to our first Fashion Week, and since then everything has exploded.
GG: How did you guys meet, and how long have you been blogging?
LW: We met when we were 12 years old, and built our friendship around our closets. Sounds kind of ridiculous, but we always say we must have aced the kindergarden lesson on sharing. Whatever one of us buys, is equally the others. The blog was created in September of 2009, but officially began the following September.
GG: Speaking of Fashion Week, it’s starting to get colder outside and February will be approaching pretty quickly. What are your go-to pieces this fall?
LW: Our go-to’s this Fall are collars instead of scarves, nordic gear, winter whites, and vintage coats.
GG: Where do you go in NYC to find your unique accessories? From zipper collars to safety-pinned mini dresses?
LW: We are all over NYC as far as shopping. Our zipper collar we found at the Young Designers’ Market in Soho, by Sohung Designs. The safety pin dress was made by our close friend, and incredible designer, Jonathan Simkhai! We also shop at stores such as Trash and Vaudeville and Vampire Freaks. That’s the thing about us… we could be in a designer dress, with a $10 skull umbrella from a gothic boutique.
GG: What trends are you looking forward to wearing in 2012?
LW: We are really looking forward to the one color head-to-toe look. Especially all red (a la Katie Gallagher.)
