DailyBuzz Style 9×9: Two Coats in One

I’ll be honest. I’m not a huge fan of the winter. I can’t stand snow for more than 10 minutes. The one thing I absolutely LOVE about the winter, however, especially in New York, is the opportunity to layer. I never thought that I could wear two, sometimes three pieces of outerwear and still make my look chic. I quickly realized that it was a super quick and easy way to mix textures, colors and structures while inspired by a specific look in Jason Wu’s Fall/Winter 2012 Collection.

Fur details (whether real or faux) can add an interesting twist to any ensemble. My new favorite fur coat from StyleNanda has a mix of different colors (it’s faux fur), so it works great with any color palette. I took Jason Wu’s fur sleeve coat as inspiration and made my own version. Not quite a DIY, but it worked just fine for me!

The navy blue Oscar de la Renta trench is a piece that I still giggle over. It fits perfectly, and the silver accents make it that much more special. For both warmth and style, I simply put my fur coat over my trench, and just like that – it turned into a trench with fur sleeves.

I rocked this look with a Ben Sherman button-down, and made sure it buttoned all the way up to my collar. I love the conservative yet stylish neckline of a nice, crisp collar, and it makes it so that your necklaces really pop. I toned down the glamour of the fur to look a bit more casual and comfy (no one likes to look OVER-dressed for Fashion Week) with my uber-comfy Maison Martin Margiela sweatpants. I didn’t, however, want to sacrifice style, so I threw on my blue suede and silver wedge Aldo pumps.

I wore this outfit on my 3rd day of Fashion Week, and because I hadn’t tried the look before, I was a bit nervous to be completely honest. I always experiment with different outfits, and usually just throw stuff together, and I was ecstatic when I got great feedback from some of the people that I view as ultimate style experts.

There were more people that mistook my two coats for one coat. When I told them it was actually two different pieces, their eyes lit up like they hadn’t thought to do that before.

I’m now inspired to continue to take runway looks and make them my own in the “real world” by adding a touch of creativity and sealing the deal with a lot of confidence.
